‘I have always been interested in places and environments. These are not glamorous places, but they are always ‘real’ places. My paintings investigate the ways people organise, design and colour their individual environments. The paintings may focus on a particular way of looking at something, a spatial idea. They may be about inspiring the viewer to appreciate an ordinary situation in a new way. However, I strive for something more meaningful beneath the images... something more personal. The everyday and routine images and objects I paint explore cultural origin, personality and spiritual life. I hope these works inspire you to appreciate the environment around you in a new way and imagine the space and place beyond the canvas.’ CMB

Background

Trained as an architect and an artist, Courtney Miller Bellairs concentrates on drawing and painting. Her work explores scale, space, structure and repetition. Exploring the relationship between art and architecture, Courtney's work challenges our understanding of architecture and culture.

Courtney's paintings concentrate on the organisation of objects and colours resulting in the depiction of space. Her paintings often depict everyday life from a unique viewpoint; cropped and composed to bring certain characteristics to the attention of the viewer. Her drawings focus on space and surface described by colour, light and shadow and the relationships between objects and materials. The organisation of objects and colours results in the description of an environment or situation and a light specific to each work.

Courtney Miller Bellairs studied at the University of Maryland, the Yale School of Art and the Yale School of Architecture where she received a Master of Architecture degree in 1996. She has received numerous prizes to pursue her work related to art and architecture. Living in London since 1996, she is immersed in painting as her principle practice. She is also a university lecturer in Architectural Design and Drawing.
